Living through WWII as a boy when we knitted squares for blankets for veterans in hospitals, mostly unaware of the enormity of the situation since we (no one) had a TV and we did not get a newspaper, I recall vividly the world that I lived in was such a wonderful experience. Everyone was getting employed, homes were being built, people seemed happy. President Roosevelt was considered a national treasure. We lived through many changes post WWII, but our national and international issues were not much of a concern. Changes started to occur, from my perspective, with the election of President Reagan. The Republican Party became more conservative, not just in degree. With Gingrich, the conservative effort essentially perceived the Democrats, as enemies are we started to experience an effort to deny any their initiatives. The road traveled has led to collapse of our national government.
At this point, I can conceive of two possibilities. (1) The people will tread water until the 2024 election. If they lose again, there may well be a reorganization the party. This is my hope. (2) The other possibility is disastrous, viz., the breakup of our constitutional government. Granted, few nations have embraced their original constitution as long as ours. However, our constitution has been revered by us and many nations.
I can only hope for the survival of our national constitution.
