Walter Mead is a person with an enormous intellect. The breadth of his knowledge is complemented by his insightfulness of the implications of history and our current problems, both nationally and internationally.
Originally in four segments, he published this long essay that offers food for thought about our present economic plight.
I have often floundered around in some despair thinking about how our nation will regain its economic strength, measured particularly by a full work force and a strong middle class. I have not read anything that suggests a path that will achieve for our nation what was true in my life time, viz., the chance for the vast majority to achieve the human desire for work, home, family, and the education of their children.
Walter Mead does not spell out how the future will develop but he does strongly suggest that we are transitioning from our manufacturing society to a new era of prosperity. As did the farming society fear for their future when our society started to transition to manufacturing, so people like myself may be simply a product of the phenomenon of what a transition is, viz., a period where the future is unknown.
What is great about this essay is the degree of optimism that Walter Mead captures as he strongly foresees out future in very positive scenarios, even if they are at present unknown in their specificity.
His essay provides great food for thought and discussion. I cannot wait to talk about this when our family gathers for our next occasion to celebrate our lives.
